Simple Ice Fishing Equipment Modifications by Ross Robertson photos by the author Prior to the start of the ice fishing season, many anglers can be found in their basement or garage tinkering and prepping their equipment for the first safe ice. While equipment has come a long way in the last decade, that doesn't stop many of us from making some equipment from scratch to do a specific job. ATV rack Many outdoors enthusiasts use their equipment for multiple tasks. Crop spraying in the summer, deer hunting in the fall and ice fishing in the winter is not uncommon. Aftermarket and optional factory equipment can be expensive and may not be what the selective angler wants. A homemade front or rear storage rack can be customized and made for a fraction of what a purchased option would cost. 1. Start by deciding what you need to carry and how big you want it to be. On my front rack, I need to carry an auger and ice chisel. Storing these items elsewhere is difficult, and they don't secure easily. 2. Take a piece of ¾-inch plywood (preferably treated), and cut it to the size of the attached, metal rack on the all-terrain vehicle (ATV). 3. Determine how the items will mount, making sure that they will fit on your trailer or in the back of your truck without needing to remove them. 4. Use of gun rack holders are an inexpensive way to mount items somewhat Rounded corners will keep you from getting caught or cut on the ATV rack throughout the season. 20 Pennsylvania Angler & Boater * January/February 2014 PFBC Facebook: PaFishandBoat
