Tying the
Zoo Cougar

The Zoo Cougar is one of a newer breed of streamers designed on western
rivers to target large, hungry trout. It works well to cover lots of water and
bring trout out of cover to chase and pursue baitfish. Created nearly 10 years
ago by western fly tying pioneer Kelly Galloup, it has proven itself on streams
and rivers in Pennsylvania and around the nation. Now tied in a wide variety
of colors and sizes, it still performs best when imitating a fleeing sculpin.
Sculpins are primarily a coldwater fish and are a popular food item for trout
and Smallmouth Bass in some areas. Look for sculpins in the water that you
fish, and match the color and size to best imitate your local prey.
Zoo Cougar materials
Hook: 4x long streamer hook such as a Daiichi 2220, sizes 4 to 2/0
Thread: Black flat waxed monocord
Head: Yellow spun deer body hair
Collar: Yellow deer tail tips
Tail: Mixed yellow and olive marabou
Wing: Two yellow mallard duck flank feathers
Underwing: White deer or calf tail
Body: Pearlescent olive thin crystal chenille
1 Secure your hook in the vise, attach the thread, wrap it to the rear of the
hook, and attach the marabou tail.
2 Tie in the crystal chenille, and wrap it 2/3 of the way back up the hook.
3 Tie in the white deer or calf tail underwing facing rearward, extending
slightly past the bend of the hook.
4 Tie in the mallard flank feathers with the concave side facing down. Line
them up so they lay as flat as possible on the top of the underwing.
5 Select some yellow deer tail hair. Stack it in a hair stacker, and attach it to
the top of the hook 1/3 of the way back from the eye. Secure it so that it flares
up to form a collar.
6 Tie 4 to 5 bundles of yellow deer body hair around the hook. Allow each
to spin around the hook prior to securing it. Push each one back along the
hook to give yourself more room as you prepare to tie in the next bundle. Be
careful not to crowd the eye.
7 After tying off the thread at the eye of the hook, use a razor and scissors to
shape the yellow deer body hair of the head of the fly. The size of the head of
the fly can be trimmed to mimic the size of baitfish you are imitating. Note
that larger heads will push more water while retrieving. Avoid trimming
the collar hair that is behind the head. Trim the hair on the underside of
the hook very close. The hair should be sparse and not tightly packed. This
allows the fly to shed water quickly during casting. Glue or head cement the
front thread wraps near the eye to finish it.
