Large females may produce in excess of 60,000 eggs
that hatch in about a day and a half. Upon hatching, the
fry scatter into the surrounding vegetation, and parental
protection is impossible. Mortality is high. After leaving
the nest, they receive no care and are consumed in large
numbers by small Largemouth Bass (up to 2 inches or so in
length) and even larger Warmouth juveniles. It is no wonder
that Mom increases the survival odds with lots of eggs.
Outside the spawning season, the Warmouth is a reclusive
fish. It does not congregate in schools and has a quiet
disposition. It is a stay-at-home fish and seeks the cover of
weeds and submerged trees. The Warmouth also avoids
intense light. If it weren't occasionally captured by a biologist
or inadvertently caught by an angler fishing for "sunnies," we
would hardly know it exists in Pennsylvania.
In fact, it was not discovered in Pennsylvania until the
1930s and remained known from only a single location for
40 years. It was likely much more common here prior to
1900, before rivers were dammed and otherwise altered, and
aquatic vegetation and riparian wetlands were destroyed.
An older record from extreme southwestern Pennsylvania
alludes to a much larger former range.

The Warmouth's current rarity led to its listing as an
endangered species. However, recent research seems
to indicate that its populations, although somewhat
isolated, are stable and doing fairly well. The large
wetlands where it occurs are protected as state game
lands, and Presque Isle's waters lie within a state park,
giving a measure of protection to the aquatic habitats
within these areas. The glacial lakes are privately owned
but are targets of ongoing conservation efforts and
in good condition. Along with these protections, the
quality of the Shenango River continues to improve. It
is too soon to make a determination, but it's possible
that in the future the Warmouth may be upgraded to
threatened status or even delisted.
Whether delisted or not, the Warmouth will continue
to dwell anonymously in its weedy environs, oblivious to
any regulatory changes, but the conservation community
should be cautiously optimistic that the goggle-eye will be
with us for a long time.
