Spatial variation in condition of Diporeia spp. in the Great
Lakes region. Journal of Great Lakes Research.
Over the past two decades, Diporeia (a benthic amphipod)
populations in the majority of the Great Lakes have declined
dramatically at the same time that invasive dreissenid mussels,
such as Zebra Mussels, have expanded. We collected Diporeia
from throughout the Great Lakes region and assessed
amphipod condition using RNA:DNA ratios. We observed
some variation in Diporeia RNA:DNA corresponding to
Diporeia population characteristics and environmental
conditions, but interestingly, RNA:DNA ratios were not
strongly associated with the presence of dreissenids.

* Smucker, B.J., Robert M. Lorantas and James L.
Rosenberger. Correcting Bias Introduced by Aerial Counts
in Angler Effort Estimation, North American Journal of
Fisheries Management.
Robert M. Lorantas is PFBC's Warmwater Unit Leader.
Estimates of angling effort (trips or angler hours) expended
on a waterway often provide the basis for estimating catch,
harvest, economic contribution and economic impact for
specific fisheries. Such estimates involve counting anglers
and boats along with collecting other data by interview from
a sample of anglers including those aboard boats. Counting
over large waterways often employs small aircraft. Such
"air-counts" may inadvertently include persons adjacent to
waterways not engaged in angling or inadvertently include
boats moored along a waterway not engaged in active fishing,
yielding an over-count. Also, shoreline tree canopy cover or
bridge crossing obstructions may lead to missed anglers or
boats, yielding an under-count. This study developed ground
truth methods and estimators to address these biases in air
counts on the Susquehanna River and lower Juniata River.
* Brown, J.J. and G.W. Murphy. Atlantic sturgeon vesselstrike mortalities in the Delaware Estuary. Fisheries.
Greg Murphy is a Fisheries Biologist who works in the Area
Fisheries Management office in southeastern Pennsylvania.
This article describes vessel-strike mortalities on Atlantic
Sturgeon, an endangered species, in the Delaware Estuary
and discusses possible implications for the Delaware
River population.

* Freedman, J.A., T.D. Stecko, Benjamin D. Lorson and
J.R. Stauffer Jr. Development and efficacy of an electrified
benthic trawl for sampling large river fish assemblages. North
American Journal of Fisheries Management.
Benthic trawls have recently been used to sample large
river fish communities in the Midwest and have been adapted
for use in Pennsylvania's large river systems. We outfitted a
trawl with the capability to apply direct current across the
mouth of the trawl. More fish, more species and larger fish
were collected with the electrified version compared to the
standard trawl. This technique improved upon methods to
sample benthic fish communities in large river systems and in

river habitats that have largely been overlooked due to the lack of an
effective technique to sample those habitats.

* Kuhn, Kris M., W.A. Hubert, K. Johnson, D. Oberlie and D.
Dufek. Habitat use and movement patterns by adult Saugers from
fall to summer in an unimpounded small river system. North
American Journal of Fisheries Management.
Kris M. Kuhn serves as PFBC's Area Fisheries Manager for
southcentral Pennsylvania.
Saugers were once the most widely distributed perch species
in North America, but populations have been reduced due to the
damming of rivers and blockage of migration routes, among other
factors. In light of Sauger population declines in other locations, the
populations in the Bighorn-Wind Rivers are valuable sport fisheries
in Wyoming. This research enhanced understanding of Saugers
in the Wind River drainage and provided information needed to
preserve the Sauger fishery into the future.

* Detar, Jason E., and Bruce A. Hollender. 2007. Long-term
evaluation of trophy trout regulations on two Pennsylvania streams.
Article in R. Carline and C. Losapio, editors. Sustaining wild trout
in a changing world; proceedings of the Wild Trout IX symposium,
West Yellowstone, MT.
Bruce A. Hollender is a retired PFBC Area Fisheries Manager for
northcentral Pennsylvania.
This study evaluated the effects of trophy trout regulations
(14-inch minimum length limit and 2 fish per day creel limit)
on the wild Brown Trout populations in Penns Creek and
Fishing Creek, two formerly stocked limestone streams in central
Pennsylvania that receive high angling pressure. Results of this
study suggest that while the wild Brown Trout populations in Penns
Creek and Fishing Creek responded positively to the trophy trout
regulations, with an overall increase in the abundance of larger
Brown Trout in both streams, it is likely that factors such as wild
trout management and shifts in angler sentiment played important
roles in the improvements, rather than more restrictive angling
regulations alone.

seasonal variations of mercury in smallmouth bass. Journal of
Freshwater Ecology.
This study uncovered important sexual and seasonal variations
of mercury levels in Smallmouth Bass in the South Fork
Shenandoah River, Virginia.

Food habits of selected fish species in the Shenandoah River
Basin, Virginia. Proc. of the Annual Conference of the Southeastern
Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
This study evaluated food habits of Redbreast Sunfish,
Smallmouth Bass, and White Sucker in the Shenandoah River
Basin, Virginia to identify dietary pathways and patterns affecting
mercury uptake.
