When fishing hair jigs, using a hi-vis line can help detect the slightest bites.

hair jigs made from troll hair, as it resembles the hair from
toys that share the same name. This thicker hair seems to
slow the descent and allows color options that aren't easily
obtainable, if at all, with natural fibers.

Blade baits

Most anglers have seen blade baits or own a few but rarely
use them. This is a mistake because they work extremely well
during the cold-water period and are very easy to become
proficient with compared to other presentations.
Made from a brass blank and molded with lead for weight,
blade baits put off a vibration that can be deadly in cold or
muddy water. Many models have several small attachment
holes, however, use a small snap as a connection. With
one rip, regardless of the line type, the line will be cut from
the metal blank. When fishing vertically, the center hole is
usually best. When casting and working back to the boat,
experimenting with different attachment points can pay off.
Many of the most popular brands come with less than the
best quality of hooks. So, don't be afraid to swap them out.
Using smaller spilt rings or swapping out for shorter
shank hooks can make your lifer easier, particularly for
those who cast.
From a fishing standpoint, blade baits are easy to use, but
one caveat is that you need to fish them slower than you may
think. Most anglers take them out and rip them until they
feel a pulsing action. If you were to do this in clear water or
a pool, you would see that while you only ripped your rod

Blade baits typically work best on bait casting equipment. When
casting, monofilament line allows for a slower fall. Use braided

tip 12 inches, the lure has moved as much as 3 feet in the
water column. This is often outside of the strike zone and
more aggressive than what most spring Walleyes want to
hit. Instead, start with gentle lifts that keep the bait within
12-inches of the bottom.
As the saying goes, "knowing is half the battle." A small
selection of hair jigs and blade baits may just bail out your
next spring Walleye hunt.
