Early Spring Sucker Fishing by Jeff Woleslagle photos by the author When I was a kid, some neighborhood friends and I eagerly awaited the first warm days in late March and early April to grab our rods and carry them across the handlebars of our bicycles. We pedaled our bikes across town to a small stream in Blair County that flowed along the edge of a golf course called Lower Brush Run. Conditions were ideal if the water was a little high and muddy. We would poke forked sticks into the soft ground of the bank along one of our favorite holes, bait our spinning rods with pieces of nightcrawlers, cast into the pool, and wait for the first rod tip to bounce and indicate the bite of a White Sucker. The fish would make sweeping and powerful runs on our small rods and provide the first real open water fishing of the season for us. Often, we would spend entire afternoons fishing and catching suckers up to 16-inches long.
