It gives me an edge
on reading the
stream behavior
and identifying the
macroinvertebrates
the fish target. After
being on the stream
for the first field trip
in the course, I was
hooked.
I also enrolled
in KINES 93
Enhancing Mastery
in Physical Activity in the fall semester of 2022. In the
mastery course, Daniel helped us hone our skills and find
techniques we wanted to pursue. This past year, water
conditions have been pretty difficult to fish. I started euro
nymphing as well as fishing a dry-dropper method to get
the dry fly fix with the effectiveness of fishing a nymph.
The dry-dropper method allowed me to become
effective with these difficult conditions when stealth was
important. There's something that warms one's soul when
making a perfect cast, getting your fly to land right where
you want to fish and the joy of seeing the surface break
when a trout rises to take your fly. Since trout spend less
than 10 percent of their time feeding on the surface, the
dry-dropper method is key. With my dry fly acting as
an indicator, I was able to effectively and stealthily place
nymphs into areas I was unable to tight line.

In combination with this fly presentation, I took a play
from Mr. Humphreys's book and began to practice the
bow and arrow cast. While Mr. Humphreys uses this cast
to get into tight areas with little room, I began to use it
to reduce the amount of movement I needed to place an
accurate cast. With this combination of methods, I was able
to finally land my first fish on a fly, a wild Brown Trout.
With all that I have learned in Joe Humphreys Fly Fishing
Program, I hope to fish streams for the rest of my life.
