TEACHING KIDS THE ETHICS OF FISHING-
Important Lessons for Now and the Future

A
s the 1970s folk song instructs, " Teach your
children well, " and fishing with the kids provides
some great opportunities.
Teach by modeling to children healthy outdoor behaviors
that will set their actions for the future:
Buy your fishing license. Show it to the kids and tell them why
fishing licenses are important funding sources for conservation.
Teach them, in simple terms, the rules of fishing.
Explain simple conservation concepts. Stewardship of our
public lands means protecting and respecting them. " Leave
No Trace " is an important concept that stresses that human
interaction with the great outdoors shouldn't take a toll on the
environment. Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects
as you find them. Resist building stone sculptures in streams.
Pack it in and pack it out. Respect wildlife.
Stay warm. Be safe. Cold water can kill!
Talk about lead poisoning, how dangerous it is for wildlife,
and how we can all do our part by careful selection and care
of tackle. Choose lead-free tackle and correctly dispose of old
lead sinkers. Retrieve and properly dispose of tangled and used
fishing line. Consider barbless hooks.

Then, make it fun. Catch fish. If you plan to eat the fish,
keep them. Otherwise, show them how to gently return
fish to the stream. Handle the fish correctly. Teach the kids
how beautiful a fish
can be.
And, whether you
catch fish or not, talk
about the joy of the
experience. Respect and
appreciation for nature
is a perfect conservation
lesson while you are
waiting for a nibble.
No matter what, it's a
great time to tell stories
and encourage a lifelong
appreciation for
nature, all year long.
It's everybody's
responsibility to protect
our environment. What
we do now will, indeed,
teach our children well.
