W
hile the plethora of tackle
that is either trendy or just
cool looking can be hard to
overlook, there are five types of lures I
rely on to put Walleyes in the boat.
Hair jig
Hair jigs have been catching many
species of fish for decades but often are
forgotten. A hair jig is great when a bite
is tough or when fishing cold water. The
hair pulses and moves like nothing else
and just seems to get bites when other
lures don't produce. Unlike other jigs that
require plastic tails or live bait, a hair jig is
often best fished just as it is with nothing
added. If the bite is tough or the water is
extremely cold, adding a little scent to the
hair material can get a few extra bites.
Blade bait
Blade baits have an unfaltering
following in many fishing circles, because
they catch fish in difficult situations and
are versatile enough to use all year long,
including ice fishing. Blade baits are
available in straight or curved models
to get more or less vibration. One of the

biggest mistakes new blade bait anglers
make is moving the blade too much. If
you pull the bait until you feel the steady
vibration, you have pulled the bait as
much as 4 or 5 feet and likely out of the
strike zone. Less is more when working a
blade bait if you aren't getting a bite.
Stickbait
A stickbait, also referred to as a
minnow lure, is one of the oldest hard
bait lures around. These minnow
imitators have a small bill that creates
a slow wobble and roll to mimic a
wounded baitfish. In most cases, they
only dive on a cast or troll to about 5
or 6 feet. This makes stickbaits great
for fishing the shallows, particularly
at night. Another great way to catch
Walleyes with stickbaits is to pair them
with a delivery system to help them
get down to depths as deep as 50 feet,
which can be needed as the water
warms in the summer months. Effective
delivery systems include leadcore, snap
weights, dipsy divers, jet divers, and
even three-way swivels with a dropper
weight setup.
