fauna as feasible. The first hurdle the PFBC faced was
no known fish surveys of the river prior to 1951.
The PFBC first compared habitats and conditions in
the Clarion River with those in the middle Allegheny
River. Comprehensive surveys revealed what the team
already suspected-that fish communities in the Clarion
River were similar to those in the Allegheny River,
absent the big river forms.
The project got off the ground in 2017. After a
detailed habitat analysis, several species of darters were
released into the river. These pioneers were collected
from stable populations in the Allegheny River and
French Creek and transported and released into the
Clarion River on the same day.
By far, the largest numbers of transferees were Bluebreast
Darters, Etheostoma camurum, and Spotted Darters,
Etheostoma maculatum, two jewel-like riffle lovers. To
date, status surveys have documented the survival of both
of these species, but the others have not been detected in
the river. Although these projects often take many years to
succeed, Bluebreast Darters are already reproducing in the
Clarion River.
The effort to date is just the beginning. At least
20 species besides these two darters almost certainly
occurred in the river prior to 1900. It is not feasible
(and in some cases virtually impossible) to capture and
translocate the larger fishes that need to be restored.
This group includes redhorse suckers, sturgeons,
Flathead Catfish, Freshwater Drum, Paddlefish, and
Quillback. The only feasible option for providing the
numbers needed to recover these fish in the Clarion River
is through hatchery culture efforts, the work of PFBC's
newly established Union City Aquatic Conservation
Center, formerly the Union City State Fish Hatchery,
Erie County. The sole focus of the new center is the
conservation of non-game animals under the purview
of PFBC (mussels, fishes, reptiles, amphibians). The
center has already propagated native mussels for release
in Commonwealth waters. The propagation of non-game
fishes, including some lost to pollution in the Clarion
River, will also be a priority.
The PFBC plans to continue translocation efforts and are
optimistic that more lost fishes, both large and small, will
again ply the unpolluted waters of the Clarion River.
