BUILDING NAMES
As the new campus project
drew to a close, College
leadership reflected on the
extraordinary individuals
who supported the College
throughout its history and
helped lay the groundwork
for the path that brought
the College to this place.
Through this reflection, the
two campus buildings were
named in honor of some
of the College's greatest
supporters.
Ken Stoudt has served as
the Chair of the Board of
Trustees for four years,
and has been a lifetime
philanthropic supporter
of the College. In honor of
his exemplary leadership,
extraordinary generosity,
and deep and abiding
affection for the College
and its mission, the College
named the administrative
building in Ken's honor
as the Kenneth G. Stoudt
Building.
During their lifetimes
and through their estate,
Dr. Emmett and Mrs. Ann
Cooper donated more than
$3.2 million to PA College,
much of which forms
the basis of the College's
endowment today. In
honor of the Coopers'
extraordinary investment
in the College, its mission,
and, most of all, its
students, the academic
building was named in
the Coopers' honor as the
Emmett M. and Ann C.
Cooper Building.

looks like this place." Vast, open lounges
give way to glass-walled collaboration
spaces. Windows into classrooms show
state-of-the-art technology and design,
intentionally mobile so spaces can be
reconfigured to accommodate an infinite
number of unique arrangements
And every space, from the administrative
offices, to the auditorium and meeting
rooms, to the student lounges, is equipped
for learning. "We have round tables
throughout the campus that are actually
white board tables. They're there for
a reason - because we want people to
recognize that learning doesn't just take
place in the hallowed four walls that we
define as a classroom, but every space
has been designed so learning can take
place everywhere," Dr. Simcox explained.
"You don't have to just
find yourself inside
a classroom to see
that learning taking
place. That's why the
collaborative areas are
front and center. That's
why everything is glass. So
that everybody that comes
in here gets to see the
vibrancy that is this place,
and the style of learning
that's very, very different
from what's taking place
everywhere else."
a privacy divider during an exam. Walls
are painted in white board paint, turning
an entire room into a blank canvas for
collaboration. Sophisticated programs
like Solstice allow students to share digital
content and bring the resources of the web
into the classroom. Apps like Poll Anywhere
and Kahoot provide interactive ways for
students to master material.
Many of these new technologies encourage
students to bring electronics into the
classroom, which could make an instructor
cringe. But, as Dr. Simcox explains, "We've
got to get very comfortable with the fact
that the students in the classroom are going
to have tools in front of them. And it is
okay for them to have a phone in front of
them, if they're using the phone for the
right reasons. And it is okay for them to
have a laptop open. And it
doesn't mean that they're
not paying any attention to
you - it's our responsibility
to make sure that they're
using those mobile devices,
whatever they happen to
be, for the good of what's
happening inside that
classroom."
Within this
space, students

clinical education
LIKE NO
OTHER.
Each learning space brings together
technology old and new to empower
students to master information in fresh
and powerful ways. Something as simple
as a personal white board transforms into
a sketch pad for a quick illustration of
an anatomical structure, an answer sheet
for an interactive quiz, a place to capture
notes in a brainstorming session, or even
While the campus
embraces technology at a
level beyond most other
institutions, the College has
not abandoned what is perhaps the most
critical tenant of health care education -
hands-on clinical experience. Direct patient
care has always been at the heart of this
institution, and likewise it is at the heart of
the new campus. The Center for Excellence
in Practice is the College's 20,000-squarefoot simulation hospital. Within this space,
students experience a clinical education
like no other. The Center encompasses
