Do you love being a health care professional? EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD E ach year, PA College recognizes one full-time faculty member with the prestigious Kenneth G. Stoudt Excellence in Teaching Award. This annual award acknowledges innovative instructors who maximize student engagement in learning and provide exemplary support to our learners. From more than 20 student nominations, a deserving winner is chosen. This year, the award was given to Deb Arndt, MSN, RN-BC, an instructor in the associate degree nursing program. Deb joined the College Community in 2007 as an adjunct instructor, went part-time in 2008 and accepted a full-time position in 2011. She currently goes to Wernersville State Hospital with her clinical students and teaches mental health theory in the classroom each semester. Before her time at the College, she worked at Philhaven in a wide variety of clinical and managerial roles for more than 30 years. "My job at PA College encompasses all the things that I love: mental health nursing, teaching and students. My desire is to see my students succeed, not only academically, but personally and professionally. As a psychiatric nurse, I especially enjoy talking with students who are struggling personally to help them learn to manage their own life's stresses so they can be emotionally available for others, especially their patients. 15 inPractice | FALL 2016 It has also been rewarding being the advisor for the College's chapter of the Student Nurses Association of PA and watching our students assume leadership roles within the College and our surrounding community. I am so happy, honored and blessed to have won the award. It is by far the highlight of my nursing career." When Deb is not in the classroom or clinical setting, she enjoys time spent with her husband, David, and three daughters (Lindsay, Courtney and Haley), as well as antiquing, going to auctions and chalk painting vintage furniture. Without her help, there would be no SNAP chapter, and I would have never been able to attend conferences and conventions to help my leadership skills grow. Even outside of SNAP, I know I can always count on her to either be a listening ear or give me advice. I believe that Mrs. Arndt is one of the greatest people I have met at this school, and I want her to know that her dedication to students does not go unnoticed. She displays leadership for all students that is inspiring. She is always available for questions and help if needed. She is encouraging to her students and is always professional.
