MEET THE BSN SCHOLARS In Spring 2016, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences awarded its first full-ride BSN Scholars scholarship to a new student entering the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program in Fall 2016. Due to the outstanding caliber of applicants, PA College also awarded three $10,000 scholarships to additional qualifying students. Meet the recipients! Summer R. Capp Hometown: Hummelstown, Pennsylvania Why did you choose a career in nursing? Why PA College? I chose a career in nursing because I believe I was put here on this earth to help others and what better way to do that than to become a nurse? Becoming a nurse has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. It allows me to share and use my strong compassion for others in a very rewarding way. I did not want just your ordinary job, I want to come home at the end of the day knowing I made a difference in someone's life. How has this scholarship made a difference for you? The full ride scholarship has been a life-changing experience for me, to say the least. It not only takes the financial burden off my shoulders and allows me to focus more on my schooling, but it gives me so much more. I feel a sense of pride and the commitment of earning my degree is just so much stronger now because I have an entire school to represent! Laura Fowler Hometown: New Cumberland, Pennsylvania Why did you choose a career in nursing? Why PA College? I have been a patient who was challenged by various health-care-related injuries and illnesses. The hardships as a patient often result in negative memories; however, my version of my recovery and care has always been positive. I have had incomparable encouragement, reassurance and positivity from my health care providers, specifically nurses, and so I aspire to become as impactful as a future nurse to my future patients. With PA College's collaborative learning style and various hightech, hands-on resources, it is possible to acquire the confidence, knowledge and teamwork skills necessary for being an integral part of an impactful, successful health care network. What have you enjoyed most about the three-year BSN so far? I have enjoyed the student-centered learning environment as compared to the traditional lecture environment because I feel more encouraged to participate in my learning. The studentcentered learning differs from a traditional lecture because the students are required to collaborate and communicate their ideas, beliefs and knowledge in order to learn. As a student, I understand that my active involvement, productivity and 3 inPractice | FALL 2016 preparedness is effective for this learning style. Already, I am engaged in not only my learning, but also my classmates' learning, which I have never experienced in a traditional lecture environment. Morgan Tumwesiigye Hometown: Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania Why did you choose a career in nursing? Why PA College? I have wanted to work in the medical field since my second birthday when I received an awesome homemade doctor's kit. It was really after spending a year volunteering in Uganda that I knew I wanted to become a nurse. Nursing gives us a unique opportunity to impact people. I knew PA College was for me because of the College's health sciences focus. I really appreciate that every class, even general education courses, is geared toward the medical profession. How has this scholarship made a difference for you? I feel incredibly blessed by this scholarship. I am thankful to the College and donors that made it possible. The scholarship has helped greatly with the financial burden. My husband and I plan to move to Uganda for full-time ministry and this scholarship will help us get there debt free. Lauren Berger Hometown: Stewartstown, Pennsylvania What have you enjoyed most about the threeyear BSN so far? So far, I really like how small the class itself is; therefore, we are like a family. It has been great meeting new people, as well as exploring a completely new place. I also like the intensity of the program, as it is already challenging me and allowing me to push myself. How has this scholarship made a difference for you? This scholarship has made it possible for me to worry less about the financial burden that is an apparent part of a college education. This scholarship has also lead me to experiences and connections that I would have never had if I had not received it, as well as allowed me to voice my opinion as a student at the Board of Trustees' Retreat, where I was able to talk openly to the most important people of the College and health care system. This scholarship is what made it possible for me to attend PA College.
