In 1967, a standalone school and residence building was completed to house 234 student nurses. The building included dormitories, classrooms, laboratories, an auditorium and a library. This building was home to many of our current alumni, including several faculty teaching at the College today! The Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing Private Homes In 1934, after completing a major renovation, the hospital acquired a private residence on Lime Street, opposite the hospital. Named the Fraim House, it was purchased for use as a dormitory to house 57 student nurses. The hospital soon acquired another private residence to house the ever-growing population of student nurses, causing the hospital to acquire additional residences for several decades. Charles Allen FonDersmith Nurses' Home In 1912, the Charles Allen FonDersmith Nurses' Home was completed. The facility provided housing for 40 nurses and contained a lecture room, recreation room, library and parlor. It was named in memory of the husband of a major donor to the project. Thirty years later, to make way for a major renovation at the hospital, the FonDersmith Home was raised from its original foundation and towed by horses several hundred feet over a series of wooden rails to its new location. 5 inPractice | FALL 2016 410 North Lime Street Within 10 years of completing the new building, it was already filled to capacity, and the School was continuing to grow. Recognizing that growth would likely continue, the School relocated to its most recent location at 410 North Lime Street in downtown Lancaster and converted to a commuter format. This allowed the School to serve an increasing number of students on an ongoing basis. In 2008, the College completed a new three-story addition, allowing for an increase in enrollment of 150 students. The expansion included new classrooms, offices, a radiology lab and a new human patient simulator. Though this move shifted the College away from the hospital physically, Lancaster General Hospital remains the primary clinical site for all our health sciences programs. 850 Greenfield Road In January 2015, PA College announced it would relocate to a new campus in a long-term lease at the Greenfield Corporate Center. Construction began on Greenfield Road on June 1, 2015, and completed on May 25, 2016. The new campus offers more than 300,000 square feet of state-of-the-art learning space, including 20,000 square feet devoted to cross-discipline simulation in the Center for Excellence in Practice. And though not a formal part of the campus, the College is exploring housing options for students in the nearby Greenfield Estates apartment complex, marking a potential return to student residence life for the first time in several decades.
