REV. SAGE OLNICK, CHAPLAIN, MDIV, RN,
ASN '05
CHAPLIAN AT LG HEALTH SPECIALIZING IN
HEART FAILURE AND PALLIATIVE CARE

D

uring a shift at LG Health, Sage
Olnick responds to every code,
though not in the capacity you might
expect. As a Chaplain, Sage is there for
code blues, trauma alerts, code Ts, stroke alerts and code Rs.
Chaplains also respond to consults for patients and their family,
as well as hospital staff members, in addition to leading support
groups, serving on committees, teaching classes, attending
rounds and facilitating advance care planning.
Sage certainly never expected to be a chaplain in the early
days of her nursing career. During her RN-BSN education, she
became deeply aware of the challenges nurses and other health
care professionals face, particularly with compassion fatigue and
moral distress. It was this awareness, combined with a calling to
care for the caregivers, that led Sage to chaplaincy.

Though Sage is removed from hands-on clinical care, her clinical
education is essential to her role as a chaplain. Her education and
nursing experience paved the way for her chaplaincy, providing
knowledge in pathophysiology, medical terminology and insight
into the health care system. Through nursing school, she gained
skills in therapeutic communication, multitasking, prioritization,
advocacy and ethics. Most of all, Sage credits her direct
experience caring for patients during some of the worst days of
their lives with teaching her empathy and compassion.
Sage shares five critical points of advice for anyone working or
learning in health care:
1. You can't take care of someone if you don't
take care of yourself.
2. In regard to removing life support, we never
stop caring for people or withdraw care -
we shift the goal and care for patients in a
different way.
3. No helpful statement begins with, "At least."
4. Our best is always good enough.
5. Healthy boundaries keep us authentic, healthy
and sustainable.
