Career
Catapult
For 115 years, Pennsylvania College of Health
Sciences has been preparing our students for
lifelong careers in health care, whether as
nurses, allied health professionals, instructors or
administrators. But sometimes, that first step into
the professional world of health care can lead a
graduate down a path they never expected, into a
completely different career arena. Check out the
stories of four alumni whose health care careers
catapulted them into new fields and specialties,
built on the foundational skills they learned during
their time at PA College.
W
hen the College first opened as the Lancaster General
Hospital School of Nursing, the School's primary
function was to train nurses to work at the Hospital.
LGH remained a major employer of graduates for many years,
but today, only about 20 percent of our graduates move into
careers within the LG Health System. With the evolution of
health care, the employers of our graduates have evolved as
well, and many of our alumni work in outpatient facilities,
private practices, retirement communities, home health care
organizations, schools and more. A number of our alumni
have returned to teach at the College as well, bringing their
educational experience full circle.
No matter where our alumni end up, career preparation is a vital
part of the PA College education. Career Services, part of our
8 inPractice | SPRING 2018
Student Service Center, offers individualized counseling services,
as well as resume reviews, mock interviews, online resources and
more. Career Services also invites recruiters for local health care
organizations to campus for vital networking opportunities, and
offers membership to a preferred online platform for job searches
and recruitment.
While those services are always available, each spring the Office of
Campus Life & Student Engagement, in conjunction with Career
Services, plans an entire week of programming for students
during Career & Graduation Week. Coupled with a variety of
graduation-focused activities, this week includes an on-campus
job fair, a fashion show on the do's and don'ts of interview attire,
tips on preparing their online presence for recruiters, expanded
resume review and mock interview sessions, and more.
PA College also hosts Career Connections Dinners throughout
the year, as described on the previous page. The College will also
be piloting a mentoring program in the fall, connecting alumni
with current students for guidance and support throughout
their educational journey. If you'd like to learn more about these
opportunities, contact our Director of Alumni Relations, John
Enderle, at jenderle2@PAcollege.edu or 717-947-6062!
No matter where our students go after leaving our halls, a
well-rounded PA College education helps prepare alumni
for successful careers in whatever field they choose. Didactic
skills may only go so far, but other skills like being a good
communicator, prioritizing and multitasking, working efficiently
and collaborating with coworkers play a vital role not only in
health care, but in any professional field. Earning your degree at
PA College is a great first step in a lifetime of professional success.
