The statistics are sobering: Nearly 1 in 5 Americans has some
sort of mental health condition, according to recent research
in the Journal of the American Medical Association. At the same
time, the nation faces a critical shortage of mental and behavioral
health professionals. In fact, about 111 million people live in
"mental health professional shortage" areas, according to
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Given
this state of affairs, I'm happy to share that PA College has
introduced a new nurse practitioner master's degree program
that includes a concentration in Psychiatric/Mental Health.
As you'll discover in "An Evolving Field" (p. 8), our alumni have
long been on the front lines of mental health nursing. With this new concentration, our current students
and future alumni will be well-equipped to build on that legacy.
