TEACHING
& LEARNING

THE BOOK'S THE THING
Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences'
Common Book Program engages the College
Community in larger discussions about relevant
topics in health care. Those interested in
participating read the same book and engage
in meaningful dialogue around the book's
themes and content-a practice that builds
bridges between participants from varied
fields of study and scholarship.
This year's Common Book, "The Immortal
Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot,
tells an enthralling story of the collision
among ethics, race and medicine; of
scientific discovery and faith healing; and
of a daughter consumed with questions about
the mother she never knew. It's a story
intimately connected to the dark history of
experimentation on African Americans, the
birth of bioethics and the legal battles over
whether we control the stuff we're made of.

HBO's film adaptation of the book, starring
Oprah Winfrey as Deborah Lacks, Renee
Elise Goldsberry as Henrietta Lacks and
Rose Byrne as Rebecca Skloot, premiered
in 2017.
The Common Book program includes
academic activities tied to the book's major
themes and, this year, to the National
Library of Medicine exhibit "Binding
Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African
Americans in Civil War Medicine."
The exhibit will be on display at the
College from Monday, September 16,
to Saturday, October 26, 2019. n
