It began on a March afternoon with an injured lacrosse player
in a grassy area outside of PA College-and by the time the
simulation scenario had finished, students from three separate
clinical areas had gained new insights into interprofessional
collaboration.
The action started with the lacrosse player's "injury," which
drew treatment from visiting athletic training students from
Lebanon Valley College. After stabilizing the athlete, the
students called for an ambulance. It arrived, carrying
PA College's paramedic students, who loaded up the patient
and drove him to the "hospital." From there, they unloaded the
injured athlete, wheeled him through the College, took him
upstairs in the elevator and delivered him to the Emergency
Department within the Center for Excellence in Practice.
PA College's nursing students, plus a faculty member who
played the role of doctor, took over the patient's care.
Eventually, it was determined he needed surgery, and he was
transferred to the operating room. At this point, the PA College
students took a break and had a brief lecture on operating
room procedures. After that, the patient was transferred from
the Operating Room to a recovery room, where the nursing
students once again took over his care.
Throughout the scenario, students who were not actively
participating in patient care observed from the debrief rooms,
and students rotated in and out of the scenario to make sure
everyone had the opportunity for interdisciplinary learning. n
Nursing students are at the ready while Paramedic students
prepare to transfer the patient.
