Evolving to Remain Relevant
Horning, York and their colleagues think critically each year about
how to keep the health care administration curriculum relevant and
up-to-date. "We work closely with our advisory committee, which
is comprised of health care leaders from all around the region,"
Horning says. "We convene biannually and ask them about the
skills and characteristics they're looking for in our graduates."
One member of that committee is Kathryn Slatt, the senior
director of innovative payment and care delivery at the Hospital
and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania. "I think it's
fantastic that PA College has brought together such a diverse
advisory committee," Slatt says. "They have a very strong
program as it stands, but it's good to have these conversations
about how to make it even stronger."
Slatt's colleague Mary Marshall, director of workforce and
professional development at the Hospital and Healthsystem
Association of Pennsylvania, recently spoke to students and
faculty members at PA College about the future of health care.
With the emergence of artificial intelligence and other ITbased systems, she said, "hospitals and health systems will need
workers at every level of the organization who are capable of
leveraging new technologies."
The challenge of helping guide hospitals through that kind of
technological disruption is part of why Clark says she's glad she
chose the path of health care administration.
"It's not just about whatever you've read in a textbook," Clark
says. "Putting the material from these courses into practice truly
does change how you view processes, how you view challenges,
and how you view solutions." n
