A BOOST FOR NURSING
SCHOLARSHIP AND EDUCATION
PA College has announced two new
endowed funds, established through the
extraordinary generosity of alumna
Shirley Glasgow Roth '65 and her
husband, George R. Roth, Jr., MD.
Shirley Glasgow attended the Lancaster
General Hospital School of Nursing
from 1962 through 1965 and met George
Roth, an intern at the hospital during the
1964-65 year. While Roth served in the
U.S. Army from 1965 until 1967, Glasgow
attended the University of Maryland and
subsequently Elizabethtown College,
obtaining her B.S. degree in 1967. They
were married that same year. They then
moved to Rochester, MN, where George
undertook a residence in neurosurgery
at the Mayo Clinic and Shirley worked
as a nurse in the neurology-neurosurgical
unit at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

They moved back to Lancaster with two
children in 1972; their third child was
born that same year. George practiced
in Lancaster from 1972 until 1975; the
family then moved to the Harrisburg,
PA area, where they resided throughout
the remainder of his practice years.
Having raised three children and missing
nursing, Shirley returned to nursing at
Carlisle Hospital and the Rehab Hospital
in Mechanicsburg in the 1980s. She was
also an active volunteer in health care
issues with the Dauphin County and
Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliances.
Her final nursing effort involved working
in her husband's office while he did
consulting work for a neurosurgical group
in Portland, ME, from 2004 to 2012,
during their " retirement " years.

Shirley Glasgow Roth '65

Shirley and George Roth value the role
philanthropy plays in strengthening
educational institutions and extending
opportunities to students who might not
otherwise have the financial resources to
pursue an education in the health care field.
Through the Shirley Glasgow Roth
'65 Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Fund, they hope to help students
interested in a nursing career realize their
dreams. The couple also believes that
nurses must be prepared to embrace
innovation and drive forward-thinking
approaches to continuous improvement.
With the enduring support of the George
and Shirley Glasgow Roth Endowed
Fund for Innovation in Nursing
Education, PA College will have the
means to continuously adapt and improve
its nursing education programs for
generations to come. n

New Support for Student Success
A new $125,000 grant from the BB&T
(now Truist) Economic Growth Fund
at the Lancaster County Community
Foundation will support ongoing efforts
at PA College to ensure student success
and retention, with added attention for
first-generation students and students
of color, to help ensure students graduate
on time.

Grant funds will be used to add a new
Learner Support Specialist position to

better meet the English as a Second Language
needs of students, launch a digital peer
tutoring program, support students who
are repeating classes they previously
failed, provide success strategies and tools
for classes most likely to derail student
progression, and provide personal attention
to students struggling with coursework.
PA College will also partner with Patients
R Waiting, a Lancaster-based non-profit
organization dedicated to eliminating

health disparities by increasing diversity
in medicine. PA College's nursing students
of color will be invited to participate in
the organization's monthly video calls,
building a stronger sense of community
and offering mentorship among minority
health professionals. n
