Pomp and
Circumstance
Gives Way
to Fun
More than 600 students who completed their
studies during the 2020-2021 academic year
graduated this past spring, celebrating their
achievements with their families at two
drive-through graduation events in June.
Cheered on by faculty and staff
members with signs and noisemakers,
graduates drove through a tall balloon
arch to an open tent, where they were
greeted by President Mary Grace
Simcox and other academic leaders,
who gave them their school pins and
diploma covers. Their next stop was
an area set up for picture-taking
with friends and family, complete
with balloon sculptures and threedimensional
props. To make the day's
festivities complete, an ice cream
truck was on hand, providing graduates
with a sweet way to celebrate their
accomplishments.
Limited to one " vehicle " per graduate,
several found creative ways to
include their extended families in
these events. In addition to pick-up
trucks and limousines, a hay wagon
and a trolley ferried graduates and
their supporters to campus. Though
COVID-19 safety protocols made
it impossible to hold traditional
commencement exercises this year,
participants traded pomp and
circumstance for a more fun,
informal, personal celebration that
graduates will always remember.
