PA COLLEGE / FEATURE AT Six alumni whose careers have brought them back to teach and lead the next generation at PA College share the lessons they impart and the inspiration that guides them. WRITTEN BY JOAN KATHERINE CRAMER ˇ ˜ ILLUSTRATIONS BY ARUNAS KACINSKAS They learned from books and lectures, taking notes in old-fashioned classrooms, sometimes practicing on themselves or one another, but mostly honing their clinical skills on the job. Today these Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences alumni serve the College as faculty members and administrators, and they revel in what can only be described as an ongoing educational revolution. They never take for granted the virtues of student-centered learning, of guiding students to make their own discoveries. They delight in the College's integration of programs across health science disciplines, and in its state-of-the-art simulation labs where students can safely learn before honing their skills in the clinical setting. But what they care about most is still what their own favorite teachers embodied. They love nurturing students, watching them grow confident and skillful. And, without exception, they live for those moments when the spark of new understanding illumines a student's eyes. PA College / Spring 2021 9
