Museum Loan Helps Tell
College Story
In 2015 the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation donated
the original hand-written 1949 charter for the Lancaster General
Hospital Alumnae Association to PA College. At the same time, they
loaned about two dozen artifacts for display in the College's Hall of
History, located at the Greenfield Road campus. The items on loan
help the College tell the story of the evolution of its various academic
programs. The Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation is
now operating as the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum
and has relocated to the former PA College building on
North Lime Street. These artifacts, along with dozens
of photographs and other items, are proudly
displayed at PA College. To arrange a visit, email

First used in the United States at Mount Sinai Hospital in
1909, electrocardiography evolved dramatically during the
first half of the 20th century. The Cardiotron, shown here, was
developed by Paul Traugott of Electro-Physical Laboratories,
Inc. and was the first direct-writing electrocardiograph. This
model dates from the mid-1940s or 1950s.
The radiation used in radiography is created by x-ray tubes like the
one shown here, which converts electrical energy into radiation.
The damaging effects of radiation were not always understood, so
protection for health care providers, such as these goggles from the
early to mid-1900s, has evolved through the years.
This mercury sphygmomanometer
was made by W.A. Baum Co., Inc.
in New York and was last patented
in 1926. Baum's simple, accurate
blood pressure instrument is the
earliest model of the blood pressure
machines used today.
