The industry, the players and the facilities all benefit, and it’s extremely cost effective in comparison with other youth sports.” BoB Baldassari, director of youth golf development, the pga of america but I feel like it’s something the PGA should be doing, and I don’t think most PGA members were aware of how it was being set up when it was announced.” Baldassari defended the alliance with LEJ, pointing out that LEJ already had the basic concept and infrastructure in place on a limited scale when they approached the PGA with the idea of making it the PGA Junior Golf League. “The premise was that we were looking for ways to grow the game in the youth area,” Baldassari said. “LEJ was already a proven success, in other youth sports as well as golf, and they had the infrastructure in place. Time was of the essence for us [to grow junior participation], and with their help, we were able to get the program running quickly, and it’s worked out well.” Durham said one question he has sought to have answered is the length of the contract between LEJ and the PGA. Bal- dassari did not cite a specific date when the working agreement would be up for renewal, but said he believes it is due for renewal later this year. Regardless of the long term effects of the PGA Junior Golf League in terms of youth player development, or whether it merely provides a competitive and team-oriented environment to bind young players to the game, the program seems likely to expand rapidly for at least the short term. Baldassari, who called the league a potential “game-changer,” said the PGA and LEJ are looking into ways to expand the program to older age groups. Johnson, meanwhile, said they would “love to be able to double” the number of participants next year.
