the lessons learned and opportunities provided through his association with Troon and its founder, long-time CEO and current
Chairman of the Board Dana Garmany. Overseeing the worldwide operations and day to day facility operations of Troon's approximately 275 managed properties gave him a comprehensive
understanding of the golf business and the concerns of both owners and professional staff. He knows something about business
growth - his employee number when he joined Troon in 1997
was 12!
"Our organizational growth at Troon was great," Easterbrook
said. "Dana is one of the most remarkable people in golf. We grew
20 straight years, from 8 to 275 properties. Our ownership was
always ahead of the curve."
As for Garmany, while sad to see his long time right hand man
and friend moving on, he was happy for Easterbrook, pleased and
proud that the PGA tabbed a key Troon executive for a new leadership position, and encouraged by the message the PGA is sending by selecting someone like Easterbrook.
"We're sad to see John go because of the many contributions
he's made to our company's growth and success," Garmany said,
"but he and I had talked about this quite a few times since the
PGA first contacted him about the position last fall, and we
agreed that it was a great opportunity for him. I also think it's
indicative that the PGA is going in a positive direction, because

John is really a non-traditional guy to put in that position in a lot
of ways and I think he'll bring a lot of energy and first-hand industry knowledge to the job. He's also not shy about telling people what he thinks, and I think we'll see some really cool things
coming out of that office as he gets his sea legs there."
One direction Garmany anticipates from his former COO is
a commitment to getting more players onto the golf course more
often, born of Easterbrook's many years of overseeing player development at Troon's managed properties.
"John and I have talked about some ways to get professionals
more involved and more successful in getting people on the golf
course, and I think we agree that the secret is to get people on the
golf course and have them find a circle of friends to play with,"
Garmany said. "We want to create certified players, not certified
range rats, and we've talked about that."
With participation declining and potential employers for
PGA professionals also disappearing roughly 10 times faster than
new courses appear, the challenge of keeping the PGA's membership happy, gainfully employed and hopefully growing will be one
that Easterbrook hopes to meet through professional education
and improved communication of opportunities to current and future PGA professionals. While that challenge will be a handful,
it appears that based on Easterbrook's track record, the PGA has
picked the right person for the job.
