In other words, why heed the order of our duly-elected governor doing his best to protect the health and lives of his citizens?
COVID-19 has spawned a new position at golf courses -
the Golf Cart Hygienist. They are professionally trained and
highly paid specialists tasked with making absolutely sure to
thoroughly sanitize each and every cart in the fleet before and

after each use. From this experience, they can graduate to building white rooms for technology companies.
All those touchpoints. Repeat 80 times. Hey boss, can I go
play some free golf now?
Last, a most somber note. I met Conrad Benitez at this year's
NGCOA Business Conference. We dined together, along with
his wife, at the awards dinner. I knew about his reputation for
hospitality and an extraordinary junior golf program, and our
conversation was casual but very friendly. I never saw a smile
leave his face even while consuming a less than stellar meal.
Conrad owned Orchard Golf and Country Club in the Philippines. He was a long way from home but obviously comfortable
in a setting with other golf course owners. Sadly and shockingly,
Conrad died from the COVID-19 virus on March 28. So did
one of his club members. Can the two be connected? Likely not,
but you never know.
Jay Karen, NGCOA CEO, wrote me, "Conrad took his business very seriously. He was a lion among course owners in Asia,
having been part of the Asian Golf Course Owners Association. But it wasn't his business acumen that impressed us most;
it was his congenial nature and friendship. To say Conrad was
one of my favorite members would be an understatement."
Conrad's death from COVID-19 is the first recorded among
the thousands of course owners and operators around the world.
I hope it's the last. Stay safe and healthy.
