COVID's Spring Impact on Golf
A Quantitative Perspective (Attempt)

ack in March as the Governor of Illinois put us in "shelter-in-place" status on 3/15 and then subsequently reversed his position on golf 's permissibility on 3/26 ("uh,
no I guess golf isn't safe") I had sworn that I wasn't going to
write about the coronavirus this month as my small act of defiance. As more figures about states, courses and rounds trickled
out in April however, as an analyst I couldn't resist the urge to
try and reconcile the disparate datapoints and come up with
some insight on how big an impact this is having on the golf
course operations industry as we open(?) the 2020 season and
what the full-season residual damage might be. So much for
defiance...
As I've sorted through the deluge of information being published, I first tossed out all the pure opinion pieces. While these
are periodically entertaining (opinions are like belly-buttons,
everyone has one), I wanted to attempt to figure out what the
net impact for the year would be on the golf operations segment
at the national level. To do that, I needed to compile information from several of the sources of available information on
"golf in the COVID era." The 3 that I ended up using and have

(GIR) outlining rounds by major markets/states using
their aggregated customer base figures (not necessarily
projectable to the US as a whole but which I believe
are directionally and order-of-magnitude instructive)
NGF's The Q - State summaries, maps, golf operator
and consumer survey results
GCSAA COVID-19 subsite - This is a primary or
referenced secondary source (nice to see some of the
organizations collaborating here vs. everyone re-inventing the wheel) of the open/close rules by state as well
as where maintenance is also permitted (most all states,
thankfully)
The first task is figuring out what percent of our inventory
is operating vs. closed due to government regulation. Figure 1
below is a timeseries from the Golf Business Solutions (GBS)
