s the northern climes open their '21 season, most were
greeted by healthy Golf Playable Hours (GPH) gains vs.
Year-Ago (YA) as the national figure advanced 9% compared to April '20. That nearly erased the Q1 deficit with the
Year-to-Date figure now registering -2% (from nearly doubledigit down at the end of March). Regional breadth improved
but still registers negative at 1:2 with 13 favorable regions vs. 23
unfavorables rounded out by 9 in the neutral zone (+/- 2%, all 45
regions now being " in season " based on Pellucid rules). You can

Played Rounds for March, as published by Golf Datatech, were
an eye-popping +45% for the month but we have to remember
that's against widespread COVID lockdowns Month 1 in '20.
Comparing the March results to a '19 non-COVID baseline
month however still represents a 33% gain so the " up " is real. Of
interest, the March national figure swung towards Public (+51%)
vs. Private (+28%) which also pulled the Public gain (+25%) for
the YtD ahead of Private (+21%) for the first time in the COVID era. The added benefit is that the rounds favorability came
against basically flat weather reported last month (+1%) so we
got a double-digit Utilization gain of 25 points marking our 10th
consecutive month of beating the weather, wow!
Jim Koppenhaver comments, " I'm at a loss for words with the
April weather results and March Utilization (and those of you
who know me know that's rare, ha, ha). I'll be surprised if we
don't see a rounds " rocket ship " in April when those results are
published; I've had the benefit already, through our Golf Market Research Center (GMRC) pilot, to see a select number of
courses' results and they're also pointing that direction. While I'd
like to call it the " Pellucid boom " (much like the current administration taking credit for an economy emerging, predictably, from
the pandemic) this is simply shaping up as the convergence of our
usual spring emergence from hibernation in the north, favorable
weather and the continued restrictions on entertainment, professional sports, live events, youth sports and most mass gatherings.
It's the perfect (positive) storm for golf operations and it will be
fun to watch it from the sidelines and document our progress. "
