Turning back the clock 13 years ago when we introduced Cognilogic, our
historical weather impact tracking tool, if Stuart and I had a nickel for every
owner/operator, service provider, manufacturer and industry stakeholder who
pooh-poohed quantifying weather impact using a rules-based system and
commercial-grade weather variables history, we'd be rich and retired now.
saying, " I don't worry about that on 1 January, it's all in the past;
if you could tell me what I'm going to spend in the future year
that's of more interest to me. " C'mon man (channeling POTUS);
wouldn't you go back and figure out what the heck you spent that
money on last year and if it was one-time or recurring expenses
that will continue to bite you in the butt in the upcoming year?
At any rate, Stuart and I finally succumbed to the fact that
perception is reality and, if for no other reason than to call all
these people's bluff, we set out 3 years ago with our valued weather
partners at AccuWeather to attempt a 60-day forecast for CR
as well as quantifying last year's CR and the 30-year Norm values
for comparison. Then we went looking for all our old " objectors "
to see who was serious a decade ago. First observation was
" Not many of them are still in the industry " (cause-and-effect?
you decide). Second observation was, split about 50/50, now
they challenged the accuracy and reliability of a 60 day forecast.
However, with the help and support of a minority of primarily
owner/operators now seeing the light and our Cognilogic historical
weather impact tool veterans, we introduced Foresight in '20
and are seeing gradual builds in the client base after the COVID
surge sidetracked some number of them who didn't care what the
weather was going to be because there were golfers lined up to
play anytime it wasn't freezing or pouring.
The timing, for the northern clime courses, is right to tee this
up for discussion because one of the primary applications of Foresight
is to figure out when the season is likely to open, how that
will compare to last year's start and how that may impact rounds,
revenue, staffing and even turf care. Since that's very topical for
owner/operators here in Pellucid's hometown market of Chicago,
I'm going to use Chicago Executive Airport (formerly known as
Palwaukee giving it the weather station designation of KPWK)
here in the NW suburbs to walk through what it's telling us for
