July Disappoints,
Defies Favorable
Forecast
J
uly delivered a surprising decline (based on our 60-day forecast
national compilation) proving, once again, that weather
is equal parts science and art. Golf Playable Hours (GPH)
for the month registered -4% vs. Year-Ago (YA) which slightly
marginalized the Year-to-Date (YtD) result to +4% (down from
June's +6% level). YtD regional breadth retreated as well to a
neutral position of a 1:1 ratio with 23 favorable regions vs. 16
unfavorables and 6 in the neutral zone (+/- 2%). You can get that

Played Rounds for June as published by Golf Datatech
marked the 3rd consecutive month of gains vs. YA registering
+6% at the All Facilities level. That was against the previouslyreported
June GPH tailwind of +2% which produced our 2nd
consecutive month of Utilization gain (62%, +4 pts).
Jim Koppenhaver comments on the results, " We had predicted
weather favorability for the apex month (highest contribution
to rounds nationally) but, when we tallied the results,
we instead got a headwind. Across the 45 weather regions,
we got hammered in Desert SW (Phoenix & surrounds) and
the entire state of FL (North & South regions). Looking at
the July YtD weather gains/losses among the Top 25 Markets,
Minneapolis continues as the biggest gainer (+27% GPH)
while Miami retains the distinction of the biggest loser (-16%).
Looking at the June YtD Utilization leaders & laggards, Miami
and Cleveland are atop the leader board (+5 pts/each) while

Minneapolis continues as the biggest loser (-11 pts, rounds
haven't increased commensurate to their large weather gain).
We've run the July " preview " compilation of our Golf Market
Research Center (GMRC) subscribers results for Rounds,
Golf Revenue and Weekend Greens Fee Rate and they're
showing an up on volume and revenue " signaling " a Utilization
and RevpAR gain for the month. Of significant note, they're
showing increased pricing power which is combining with the
rounds gains to turbocharge the Golf Revenue gains vs. YA. In
addition to knowing their weather-adjusted performance, our
GMRC subscribers also have visibility into the summarized
portfolio of participants and a limited number of markets to
reference whether their performance is pacing, leading or lagging
the GMRC portfolio universe; you could too (hint, hint). "
