e mentioned last month that August was the final key
hole of Amen Corner for the '23 core golf season and,
like often happens on Sunday in Augusta, the wheels
came off as Golf Playable Hours (GPH) for the month registered
-12% vs. Year-Ago (YA) which erased nearly the entire Year-toDate
(YtD) favorability now resting at +1% (from July's +4%
level). YtD regional breadth was fortunate to maintain its neutral
position of a 1:1 ratio but the mix shifted to 15 favorable regions
vs. 19 unfavorables and 11 now in the neutral zone (+/- 2%). You

Played Rounds for July as published by Golf Datatech
marked the 4th consecutive month of gains vs. YA registering
+3% at the All Facilities level. That was a great result recalling
our previously-reported July GPH headwind of -4% which
produced our 3rd consecutive month of Utilization gain (65%,
+6 pts).
Jim Koppenhaver comments on the results, " When I saw the
initial extract of the August GPH figures I figured we hadn't
updated for the final 1-2 days of the month because the regions
were uniformly down and many of them by double-digits
which just doesn't happen in our core months. Alas, the figures
were correct and it really was that bad a month between sweltering
temperatures and our friend Idalia which ravaged parts
of FL and the SE Coast for golf. Across the 45 weather regions,
we got hammered in Desert SW (Phoenix & surrounds)
and the entire state of FL (North & South regions) each of
which registered GPH declines of >25% for the month. Looking
at the August YtD weather gains/losses among the Top 25
Markets, Minneapolis continues as the biggest gainer (+27%
GPH) joined by Chicago, St. Louis and Philadelphia seeing
double-digit gains as well while Miami retains the distinction

of the biggest loser (-18%). Looking at the July YtD Utilization
leaders & laggards, Miami tops the leader board (+10
pts) while Minneapolis continues as the biggest loser (-9 pts,
rounds haven't increased commensurate to their large weather
gain). Our August " preview " compilation of our Golf Market
Research Center (GMRC) subscribers suggests that Rounds
and Revenue did not follow the weather downward linearly
which would indicate continued golfer resiliency relative to the
weather ups and downs. In addition to knowing their weatheradjusted
