'23 Quietly Approaching Record Rounds:
Will we hit 520M rounds?

or the 20+ years I've been in the golf industry, attempting
to accurately and consistently count annual rounds at the
national level has been more dark art than data science.
While we've made (some) progress since pre-'00 when one of
the industry associations was reporting annual rounds from consumer
survey projections (vs. facility-reported through-the-turnstiles
counts), we're still living primarily in the world of percent
changes measuring the up/down but no base national number
annually or monthly. Turning the clock back to '99, our friends in
Jupiter were calling annual rounds >550M based on the consumer-reported
frequencies multiplied by the number of golfers. My

background in Consumer Package Goods research had taught
me that self-reported consumer behavior, as it related to frequency
of activity, was nearly always high and, pretty consistently,
overshot the mark by 10-15%. So I was probably one of the few
(of those paying any attention to the national rounds) that were
surprised when the Golf Datatech/NGF inaugural facility-reported
rounds count came out in '01 stating that the figure for '00
was 518M and, poof, we lost 6% of our rounds overnight (but it
wasn't 10-15%, surprisingly and thank goodness).
Since '01 we've followed both our internal tracking and projections
of national rounds (but small sample) and Datatech's to
