process trying to figure out what broke where and why (again,
knowing Python well is fundamental to troubleshooting/diagnosing
these annual " surprises " ).
So here was the challenge I gave to him and AI:
* Every year we go through a classification process for
each one of the ~14K facilities in the Internet Golf
Course Database (IGDB) which is one of the sources
for our Golf Local Market Analyzer (GLMA)
* We do this uniquely for each of the 210 Designated
Media Areas (DMAs) in the US. Think of these as
the geographical puzzle pieces that comprise the US
(defined by US Counties) and which all have to fit
together to cover the entire US landmass. Unlike Core
Business Statistical Areas (CBSAs), which are the
metro areas of the US and their immediate surrounds
(meaning, if you mapped them, there would be
significant white space between), DMAs have to extend
until they get to the adjacent DMA (i.e. no white
spaces on a map)
* We do this only for the Public-Regulation length
facilities so that filter must also be applied
* Within each DMA we want a (relatively) balanced
distribution among the Public-Regulation length
facilities across Premium/Value/Price. This means that
the price breaks for each will " float " up and down as
we cross markets (Manhattan KS will be different than
Manhattan NY; OK, you got me, no golf courses in
Manhattan NY but you get the idea). There's also the
slight challenge of what to do with " clumping " within
markets (i.e. a disproportionate number of courses are
all priced $40-$45) as well as what do you do with
" ties " (i.e. if the Premium/Value distribution breakpoint
happens between two courses both priced at $59, what
do you do?)
* So, we gave ChatGPT the base facility file with the
following facts for each facility: Name, DMA code,
previous Pellucid facility type, Highest WE Greens
Fee and instructed it to classify all facilities into the 5
Pellucid facility types: Private, Learning & Practice,
Public-Premium, Public-Regulation, Public-Price
The next part is kind of the " magic " in my opinion which was
writing the instructions for ChatGPT that will guide and dictate
how it approaches the problem. This was collaboration between
the two of us but my son did the heavy lifting in figuring
out the scope and phrasing and I just did color commentary like
" consider this " or " you forgot that " . The thing that was amazing
is it was simply written, English instructions of the steps and
decision rules that it needed to follow to attempt (color me still
