May Delivers
Significant Setback
M
ay delivered a tough setback as Golf Playable Hours
(GPH) fell 6% vs. Year-Ago (YA) which erased the entire
Year-to-Date (YtD) cushion setting us back at level
(0%) through 5 months. The YtD regional breadth metric also
returned to neutral, although advancers still outnumber decliners,
at a 1:1 ratio comprised of 21 favorable regions vs. 16 unfavorables
and 8 in the neutral zone (+/- 2%) with all regions now

National Played Rounds for April as published by Golf
Datatech continued to follow weather variance registering +1%
at the All Facilities level. That reported result was balanced
between the Public (+1%) and Private (+1%) sectors. The intersection
of the 1% played rounds gain and our previouslyreported
1% capacity rounds increase for the month created a
slight Utilization drop of
1 point leaving the YtD
Utilization
figure basically
flat (-0.7 points for
all us detail geeks).

volatility in the May figure and unfortunately, the wild pendulum
swing was not in our favor with the 6% GPH decline.
Looking at the map for the current month, it's pretty much
all red where it matters for the month of May (SE Coast, FL,
TX, SW Desert, CA Coast) while the early season results for
the Great Lakes region had less pain, experiencing flat results.
Looking at the YtD, it's slightly better with North FL, North
CA and the Pacific NW holding on to gains so far. Switching
to YtD market-level weather and focusing on our Top 25 Markets,
Denver, Detroit and Pittsburgh are all having +10% or
greater results through May while Philadelphia is the biggest
laggard at -13%. Finally, observing the April YtD Utilization
leaders & laggards, LA & San Diego represent the West Coast
and Washington DC the East among leaders (6+ pt gains)
