courts to support tennis growth...and court infrastructure [is]
being compromised with people playing pickleball on those
courts or courts being repainted. " USA Pickleball CEO Mike
Nealy's rejoinder was frank and blunt, " If I was in tennis's
shoes, I know that wouldn't be something I would appreciate
either. The market will sort it out. " The fortunate thing thus
far is it appears that pickleball is simply stunting tennis' current
growth rate vs. forcing it into retreat. With that in mind,
let's return to the First Tee history and an industry that bred
its own supply and demand competition vs. had its walled garden
invaded by external forces.
At the initial launch of The First Tee, the primary initial
goals were centered around raising money to build " alternate
golf " facilities (short courses, 9 holes or less etc.) in under-served
locations for golf supply based on demographics (diversity and
lower income as barometers). While historical information on
the program in the public domain is (surprisingly) rare, some
of us actually keep hard copies of media on select topics. At
the inaugural Golf 20/20 meeting, the primary goal of The First
Tee for the upcoming year was to break 100 new facilities in the
ground by year-end 2001. So you don't have to take my word for
it, below is a Golfweek article published 1/27/01 which graphically
lays out the future aspirations and economics at that point
in time (see image 1 above).

operator attendees at the initial 20/20 summit regarding whether
building new, subsidized supply was wise, The First Tee's plans
for the '01-'05 period were " full speed ahead " as illustrated in
this PR piece published by The First Tee in 2001 (in the middle
graph that's 205 facilities in '04 reaching 250 in '05 (and stated
in the copy to the right) (see image 2 above).
To their credit, according to another Golfweek article Feb.
26 2005, they were on track to their goals by that year-end as
they crossed the 200 facility opening and announced the latest
funding for the project of $3M from the Dept. of Justice (on top
of DOJ cumulative contributions of $4.5M over the previous 2
years according to the same Golfweek article (below) (see image
3 on next page).
Sometime in Joe Louis Barrow's Phase III ('05 and beyond),
a couple of realities set in from my vantage point:
