The success of TGL could have big effect on simulator
use - maybe offsetting the negative impact of falling
TopGolf consumer acceptance. The failure of TGL
could also mean bad karma and make professional golf
more of a mess than it already is.
When I tried to register for the PGA Show in November, I
was asked to resubmit verification of my golf industry involvement.
I guess after 30 years of attendance, they thought it might
be time. They also said that if I didn't hear back within 5-7 business
days, my registration had been denied. I sent them pictures
of my last two badges, but didn't hear anything back. After two
weeks, I decided to email Marc Simon to see if he could help,
including the recent discovery of the long friendship between
his late father and John Brown. I heard back within 20 minutes.
Not only did my registration come back quickly; but Marc was
visiting his mother who still lives just off the Hamilton campus
and the story about John Brown made her smile. Now that's
good karma.
A couple days later, during our weekly debrief with Ross
Liggett of Metolius regarding our work on real time customer
and revenue analytics; I mentioned my registration hassle as we
were trying to get organized for the PGA Show. I already had
some karma - Ross' father and I were instructors on the Breckenridge
Ski School back in the 1970s. Since Metolius also does
a lot of work with John Brown, Jr. I also mentioned theJohn
Brown, Sr. part of the registration story. When I got to the St.
Lawrence part, Ross paused - it turns out his mother also went
to St, Lawrence. She was 2 years ahead of my wife, but they were
in the same sorority and she knew several other friends of mine
as well. Sometimes karma can be amazing.
I rarely travel on Lake Drive anymore and hardly ever listen
to radio - I prefer music of my own choice. In 1998, I was
not only driving up Lake Drive as an alternate to the freeway,
but was listening to the classic rock station. At the exact moment
I was passing that fateful house from 1968; a song from
the Beatles White Album came on. We see 2025 as a potential
pivotal year for golf. After 5 years of great karma, and an influx of
private equity money in almost every corner of the industry; how
we handle prosperity and the changes we see coming have the
potential for both good and bad. At least those of you attending
our session in Orlando in about 10 days will avoid saying " no
