The Kythnos
Microgrid
HE NONINTERCONNECTED ISLAND OF
Kythnos (100 km2 with 1,600 inhabitants)
belongs to the complex of the Western
Cyclades islands in Greece and is located in
the Aegean Sea, 104 km from Athens. The
island has a rich history in the adoption of sustainable
energy applications, starting from the installation of the
first wind farm in Europe [5 × 20-kW wind turbines (WTs)]
by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) in 1982, followed in
1983 by the first hybrid station comprising a 100-kW photovoltaic (PV) system coupled with a 400-kWh battery storage,
also by PPC. In 1989, the WTs were replaced by 5 × 33 kW
(Figure 1), and in 1992, the PV inverters were upgraded.

A 20-year history.
Following the island's tradition, the Kythnos Microgrid
was installed in 2001 in the Gaidouromantra valley (Figure 2),
forming probably the first microgrid in Europe supplied by
100% renewable generation most of the year. The system
was built in the framework of two projects, PV-MODE
(JOR3-CT98-0244) and MORE (JOR3CT98-0215), supported
by the European Commission, for the electrification of 12
vacation houses in a settlement situated 4 km away from
the closest pole of the medium voltage line of the island.
The grid and safety specifications for the house connections have followed the technical practice of the national
electricity utility. The main partners of the two projects
were the Center for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving
(CRES) in Greece and SMA Solar Technology AG and the
Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik (ISET e.V.) in
Germany. In 2006, the Kythnos Microgrid was upgraded in
