the short-term and long-term estimation
of BTM resources. The authors
also describe the latest
advancement in leveraging reinforcement
learning for volt-VAR control
with BTM resources.
In " Unleash Values from Grid-Edge
Flexibility: An Overview, Experience,
and Vision for Leveraging Grid-Edge
Distributed Energy Resources to
Improve Grid Operations, " Fei Ding,
Weijia Liu, Utkarsh Kumar, and Yiyun
Yao first articulate the importance
of grid-edge flexibility and the benefits
of integrating grid-edge DERs to
enhance the automation of DERs;
improve energy efficiency for customers;
and increase capacity and
flexibility for the power grid. The
authors then discuss how to estimate,
aggregate, and optimize gridedge
flexibility. Three example
applications of grid-edge flexibility
are highlighted: 1) federated architecture
for grid-edge DER integration
and control; 2) hierarchical control of
BTM DERs in smart communities;
and 3) enhancing grid resilience with
the use of grid-edge DERs.
Next, " Building Energy Systems
as Behind-the-Meter Resources for
Grid Services " is contributed by
Srinivas Katipamula, Robert G. Lutes,
Sen Huang, and Roshan Kini. The
authors share their vision on integrating
buildings as BTM resources
and exploring their flexibility to
enhance grid reliability. In particular,
two applications of building control
technologies, including intelligent
load control and transactive control
and coordination, are
discussed in detail.
From both simulations
and field-test results
from real buildings,
these two building
control technologies
demonstrate significant
benefits for the
peak load management
and coordination of DERs. The
authors also share the lessons learned
from using buildings as a grid asset.
The fifth feature article, " Big Data
Analytics With Behind-the-Meter
DERs in the Digital Utility, " is by Arnie
de Castro, Ashley Mui, and Garrett
Frere. In this article, the authors first
discuss the new data challenges with
BTM DERs and then present an overview
of emerging big data analytics
and applications in utilities with both
software and hardware advancements.
The authors highlight two use
cases of big data analytics, especially
deep learning approaches, for BTM
DERs: net-load forecasting and optimization.
The authors also describe
their envisioned big data architecture
and state-of-the-art technologies to
improve the accessibility to high-frequency
data.
In " Closing the Loop on Grid-Edge
Visibility: Advanced Metering Infrastructure
for Distribution Planning
and Operation, " Killian McKenna,
Pete Gotseff, Meredith Chee, and
Earle Ifuku describe how advanced
metering infrastructure (AMI) could
help utilities improve grid-edge visibility
and facilitate the integration of
BTM DERs, and they share their
experience of analyzing AMI data in
Hawaiian Electric. The authors highlight
four use cases of mining the
AMI data, including 1) analyzing the
load; 2) evaluating smart inverter
operation; 3) network diagnostics;
and 4) operations and volt-VAR optimization.
The authors also share their
thoughts on practical considerations
when integrating AMI data into
utility systems.
The final feature article, " A GridEdge-Inspired
and Community-Oriented
Control Framework: Utility
Perspective on Centralized and Decentralized
Control, " is contributed by
Honghao Zheng, Junhui Zhao, Niroj
Gurung, Ryan Burg, and Paul Pabst.
This article presents an overview of
ComEd's vision for developing and
deploying a future power grid control
framework inspired by grid-edge
functionality and oriented by communities.
The authors also share
recent demonstrations at ComEd
on DER energy management systems;
utility-operated community
microgrids; battery energy storage
system outage management; and the
Sensors with Intelligent Measurement
Platform for Monitoring and
Control in Distribution Circuits (SIMPLE)
platform to realize their vision.
