Big data analytics with behindthe-meter
distributed energy
resources in the digital utility.

N THIS ARTICLE, THE AUTHORS DISCUSS
the applications of big data analytics with
behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy
resources (DERs) to manage the abundance
of data, provide better customer care,
improve operations, and reduce costs in the increasingly
digitized grid.
Introduction
The increasing prevalence of BTM DERs, such as
solar, wind, battery storage, and microgrids,
poses a challenge to the utilities industry
today. Advancements in analytics and big
data processing can address this challenge.
BTM data are characterized by
sensor data occurring onsite on the
energy consumer's side of the meter.
These data are not visible to utilities
and transmission organizations.
Capturing BTM information is an
exercise in big data and streaming
data collection. Figure 1 demonstrates
the concept of BTM data.
Big data commonly refers to
data that are too large or complex
to be easily processed by traditional
software and computing resources.
Large data are characterized by dense
and voluminous data (billions of observations),
which can be complex, with an
overwhelming number of variables. The
ability to capture, store, and analyze big data
is a unique and growing problem.
