In a BESS, the inverter acts as the point of integration
between the ac grid and the distribution energy resource.
A droop-control strategy is sometimes implemented in
the control system of the inverter where it regulates the
frequency and/or voltage by adjusting the output active
power or reactive power of a controlled asset. The BESSbased
microgrid solution for the OMS could be connected
on the primary or secondary side and enable utilities to
make sure that residential loads receive the required energy
in the upstream outage.
Employing a BESS-based OMS in remote locations to
handle power outages is customer oriented (see Figure 6).
It overcomes the drawbacks of traditional methods, which
are either too expensive to implement in these locations,
or the locations do not have the physical capability, such
as connecting another feeder to form a loop.
SIMPLE: Potential Path to Distributed
Intelligence for Grid Flexibility and Resiliency
Apart from DERMSs and microgrid controllers, ComEd
has been collaborating with universities and national
labs to develop, test, and commission grid-edge sensors
and controllers. These intelligent
devices will help utilities better
monitor DER status on the grid
edge and facilitate modular grid
operation as well as microgrid
forming under extreme weather
conditions. It is important to note
that high-fidelity monitoring and
distributed intelligent control may
help reap the full benefits of high
penetration of DERs, and they are
often a part of the lowest level of
the sensor and control systems
that are deployed on medium-voltage
distribution systems.
ComEd was awarded a threeyear
DOE grant in 2017, " Sensors
with an Intelligent Measurement
Platform and Low-cost Equipment.
The primary focus of this project was to develop and
introduce a voltage and current sensor intelligent platform
with enhanced characteristics such as accuracy,
bandwidth and harmonic range, and high measurement
granularity for medium-voltage distribution system monitoring,
protection, and control. Through the utilization of
time-synchronized local processing of high-frequency
sampled measurements, SIMPLE expands real-time monitoring
and management of distribution systems that have
high penetration of DERs.
The SIMPLE platform uses commercially available voltage
and current sensors integrated into an intelligent
measuring device (IMD). The IMD offers
x sensor data compensation and correction to
enhance measurement characteristics, including
accuracy and frequency range as well as improved
measurement granularity for medium-voltage distribution
system monitoring and automation
x additional flexibility and capabilities in the interface
layer for communication and distributed control.
Figure 7 shows the high-level SIMPLE platform's block
diagram. It includes voltage and current sensors, an
