x Regional power grids: In the next 50 years, Singapore
plans to explore the possibility of a regional grid.
Considering the scarcity of land and renewable
sources, Singapore can potentially access more energy
options (such as hydro and solar) in the neighboring
countries to develop a regional grid that will
provide greater resilience and meet the collective
needs of the region.
x Low-carbon alternatives: Singapore would investigate
alternative energy solutions, such as carbon capture,
utilization, and storage, green hydrogen, etc. that can
help alleviate Singapore's carbon footprint.
Four Switches to Power Singapore's Future
Singapore solar photovoltaics (PVs) contributed merely
1.3% of the total electricity capacity in 2019-compared to
Hawaii Island, where the renewable penetration was
around 43% from different renewable sources in 2020.
Furthermore, South Australia achieved around 60% from
solar in 2020. When compared with other Asia-Pacific
countries (see Figure 2), the highest utilization of solar
energy was in China, Japan, and India. In contrast, the
deployment of solar energy in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh
is not substantial.
As a result, Singapore has to reduce its carbon emissions
outside the energy-generation sector by working
with various stakeholders, such as
businesses, the research community,
and the public, to achieve a lowcarbon
future while contributing to
its economy. This article highlights
the recent initiatives taken in Singapore
to encourage renewable
energy deployment and the various
challenges associated with it.
