A Global View of
Electrified Vehicles

otivated by the rate of electrification within
and around modern-day vehicles, we present to you the
second issue of volume two of IEEE Electrification Magazine, focused on electric and hybrid electric vehicles and their technologies. the current generation of electric and hybrid vehicles
have entered the marketplace at an unprecedented rate over the
past two decades, with many choices now available from both
major and emerging auto manufacturers. one can fairly easily spot
a quiet passenger vehicle on the road, while more charging stations
are being installed in educational institutions and hospitals as we
experience the dawn of a new era of electrified transportation. it
may not be long before we see a surge of electric vehicles on the
roadways, while supermarkets and other commercial entities offer
charging facilities for electric vehicles.
today's vehicles, even the ones driven by internal combustion
engines, are more electric than ever. the shortcomings of
hydraulics-based and other mechanical systems are mitigated by
replacing as much of the mechanics as possible with electromechanics and electronics in conventional vehicles. complementing
or replacing the internal-combustion-engine-dependent powertrain is the next big step toward vehicle electrification. the electrification enabled by the momentum in the development of
power electronics and motor drives is growing and will continue
to in the future, leading to vast reductions in the weight, size, and
cost of the systems. the battery technologies are still the impediment for the greater adoption of electric vehicles, due to the cost,
range, and charging issues, but significant research and development efforts are ongoing to alleviate these problems. in addition,
the next generation of wide-bandgap semiconductor devices
offers the potential of much more efficient and compact power
electronics for high-power electrification in all sectors.
electrified vehicles driven by high-efficiency electric machines
and power electronic converters and powered by high-power and
energy-dense, long cycle-life battery packs that are recharged from
smart grid-enabled charging stations provide the means for an
