there are two separate Weg coolant
systems-a low-temperature loop for
the etds and a high-temperature
(>100 °c) loop for the ice (figure 1).
often, a third coolant system using
automatic transmission fluid (atf) is
also used when the electric motor is
located within the transmission or
transaxle to provide additional cooling to the electric motor. the additional coolant loops inevitably add
components, parasitic power consumption, and cost to the vehicle.

the power electronics convert dc power from the battery
pack to ac power for the operation of the electric motor. in
regenerative braking operation, the
power electronics convert ac to dc to
charge the battery pack and recuperate
energy. during operation, inefficiencies
in the devices generate heat that must
be dissipated. the heat flux generated
by the power electronics devices varies
with the number and area of semiconductor devices, which are dependent
on the size and type of vehicle (e.g., ev
and hev).
older-generation automotive power
electronics modules were typically
cooled via an aluminum cold plate
mounted to the modules, with thermal
grease applied at the interface [figure 2(a)]. to reduce the
package thermal resistance, modern designs eliminate the
thermal grease interface and apply cooling directly to the
module base plate [figure 2(b)]. a more advanced doublesided power electronics cooling approach is used in the
2008 lexus hybrid system (ls 600h). in this double-sided
