Electric-drive vehicles, including this Toyota Prius HEV, currently make
up 3% of the U.S. automotive market, and PEVs account for just onethird of this small market share. (Photo by Dennis Schroeder, NREL.)

Guaranteed access to workplace charging eases range anxiety and
encourages more widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Stations
such as these at NREL's staff parking garage make it possible to
restore batteries to a full charge during the workday while providing
valuable research data to staff. (Photo by Dennis Schroeder, NREL.)

technology really will deliver the driving experience they
expect, not just great energy savings for a reasonable cost.
Many all-electric vehicles currently on the market can travel 60-100 mi on a single charge, but that still falls woefully
short of the 300-mi/tank range of many gasoline-powered
passenger vehicles. and the majority of charging systems take
hours instead of minutes. today, the technology differences
require behavioral changes to adapt to the technology.
the time it takes to get new vehicle technologies to
market-often 16-22 years from concept to deployment-also poses huge challenges. the large-scale
introduction of new technology is very expensive and
capital intensive. automotive manufacturers and station operators need a strong underlying economic case
to make such large investments.
Finally, with model year 2012 passenger vehicles averaging 23 mi/gal, growth in the electric-drive vehicle sectors continues to be tempered by competitive pricing and
continual energy-efficiency improvements for traditional
internal combustion vehicles. connecting Pevs to the grid
and each other can enhance the value proposition of electric-drive vehicle adoption.

Solar photovoltaics' variable nature and concentration of electricity
output in the middle of the day pose limitations, but those can be balanced with V2G technology. (Photo by Dennis Schroeder, NREL.)

The integration of vehicles, the electric grid, buildings, and transportation infrastructure is crucial to moving energy savings to the next
level. NREL's new Energy Systems Integration Facility is the nation's
premier facility for this cutting-edge research. (Photo by Dennis Schroeder, NREL.)

Making Connections: V2G Technology
not only do Pevs face challenges on the consumer
acceptance front, there are also concerns about the impact
of a nationwide migration to a fleet of electric-drive vehicles on electricity demand. the utility infrastructure has
