Rhodes, which is also because of the
partial use of LFO for certain units.
Overall, NIIPSs exhibit a substantially increased cost compared to the
mainland system's power grid (AVC
is two to eight times higher than the
average system marginal price of
the mainland grid).
In Figure 7, components of the
generation cost are shown, averaged over all NIIPSs, for the thermal units (variable cost and full
cost, including fixed O&M and
capital costs), RES stations, and
overall generation cost (total cost
in Figure 7, based on annual compensation to all stations divided
by total demand). The direct
effect of declining oil prices over
the years 2014-2016 is clearly
apparent on the AVC of the thermal units and eventually on the
average full cost (AFC) and the
overall generation cost. RES compensation, on the other hand, has
changed only to a small extent
because of the connection of new
stations with differentiated feedin tariffs. It is noteworthy that,
when oil prices were high in the
years before 2014, increasing RES
energy penetration in the island
systems had a positive effect on
the overall generation cost. Currently, with oil prices at the level
of US$50 per barrel or less, this is
not the case; RES energy on average is compensated at around
