HIS IS A HISTORICAL MOMENT: WHEN THE GLOBAL
population is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and peo-
ple are adjusting to new norms of life such as social dis-
tancing and travel restriction. On a positive note, we hear the
exciting news that scientists are collaborating worldwide and
sharing data of virus genes; scientists work both day and night. In
record-setting speed, the vaccine was produced within a short 40
days after the gene sequence was published. This story shows us
how important it is to have researchers sharing research results in
a timely fashion. The IEEE and IEEE Electrification Magazine work
with this goal in mind.
The pandemic also reveals the importance of industrialization
and manufacturing possessing adequate supply chains. Manufac-
turing and critical infrastructures, including electrification, are
indispensable. Science, technology, engineering, and mathemat-
ics (STEM) is the foundation of this industry and economy. In

technology of decarbonization, and there are two critical compo-
nents for power electronics advancements: materials and control.
The first article, "Power Gallium Nitride Technology" by Dilder
Chowdhury of Nexperia, discusses a specific type of material, gal-
lium nitride (GaN), for power electronics. Chowdhury compares
the material properties of GaN, silicon carbide, and silicon (Si).
