P2G conversion is a promising technology that could
use electricity for electrolysis to produce hydrogen or
other types of gas, such as methane or liquefied gas,
which can be stored and used at other hours to produce
electricity. P2G conversion is viable for load management,
peak-shaving, and devising generation flexibility. However,
its structural complexities and maintenance requirements
disqualify its end-use applications in electric power systems.
The P2G conversion in the natural gas infrastructure
could further promote the use of natural gas in a hybrid
power storage/generation application.
Electrical ESSs
The capacitor is historically recognized as a means of
offering high-power, low-energy storage technology. In
addition, a supercapacitor is an emerging type of ESS that
can charge/discharge large sums of electricity in a very
short time, ranging from tens to hundreds of milliseconds.
The superconducting magnetic ESS is another ESS technology
that stores energy in a magnetic field. The main
feature of electrical ESS is its nearly instantaneous
response to system requirements, which could enhance
the grid stability. Additionally, this type of ESS enhances
the fault ride-through capability of DERs, which is a prerequisite
for their seamless integration in power system
operations. However, the energy storage capacity of this
type of ESS is quite limited, which makes it ineffective for
medium- and long-term applications.
Mechanical/Thermal ESSs
A flywheel, which falls into this category, is composed of a
rotating mass that can absorb electric energy and store it
as kinetic energy in its accelerating/motoring mode of
operation. The kinetic energy would be released to
