Expanding hydrogen
utilization in
multiple energy
sectors will support
hydrogen as a
game-changing
energy carrier.

is for decision making and optimization around economics and
hydrogen-fueling demands. these
two control loops factor in energy
price forecasting, hydrog en de mand, hydrogen storage state of
charge, utility control, power, and
voltage. none of this is necessary,
though, if there is not a clear benefit to these operation modes, so the
benefits must reach beyond the
question of whether an electrolyzer
can respond to grid and renewable
signals. our research team demonstrated that electrolyzers could enhance grid stability
by limiting frequency and voltage excursions, and an
nreL technoeconomic analysis looking at revenue
operation and device optimization found that it is possible to reduce electrolyzer operation costs by up to

20% using current market and rate
structures within california.

Next Steps for Renewable
Hydrogen-Fueling
Infrastructure Development

the h2@Scale objective of connecting
all the U.S. energy sectors via economical hydrogen is providing a roadmap to increase renewable hydrogen
for transportation. this initiative is
showing how hydrogen, an energy
carrier, can provide multiple benefits
with multiple sectors to enhance the
value proposition (Figure 7).
renewable generation costs for wind and solar are
decreasing. as of august 2016, 29 states, plus Washington, d. c., and three territories, have a renewable portfolio standard, and eight other states and one territory
