which compares responses to a rate-of-change-of-frequency
(RoCoF) event from a VSM with optimal damping
and synchronous machines in a simulation. Moreover,
each parameter influences a different part of the stiffness
spectrum, so the entire dynamic stiffness can be
shaped. Finally, should the characteristics of the grid
change, the parameter values can be adaptively varied
during operation.

Seamless Islanding
When transitioning from grid-connected to island mode,
as seen in Figure 10, the local generation increases its
power output so that the power flow across the upstream
breaker is zero and the microgrid is entirely supplying

the prevalence of bushfires in Victoria, the " bumpless "
islanding and reconnection may be used to mitigate the
effect of fires on the supply to remote and rural locations.
In such cases, a feeder would be de-energized just prior to
a bushfire passing through an area, with disconnected
communities supplied by the grid-forming BESS. Once the
fire moved away and the feeder was checked for damage,
the line would be re-energized before the microgrid performed
a " bumpless " transition back onto the grid. The second
important use of the energy storage is to manage peak
demand on stressed feeders, therefore deferring investment
in network augmentation. By embedding a generation
source close to the load, the utility plans to study the
effects this will have on postponing network investment
involved with upgrading feeder lines to support increased
loads. The side effect of having a grid-forming inverter connected
to the grid is that it improves local power quality,
such as the power factor, harmonics, flicker, and negative
sequence voltage.
